Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “liberal arts curriculum?”

We will use a broad curriculum that includes instruction in history, geography, foreign language (Spanish), the arts, health and science.  We believe that the testing-driven focus on language arts and mathematics leaves out important aspects of learning.  We will provide a rigorous academic background for all of our students in every area, including language arts and math, to prepare students to be successful in high school, college and beyond.

Why do I want a teacher-run school for my child?

We started the BTU School with the firm belief that no one knows better than experienced, excellent teachers what is best for children.  The BTU School will provide an environment in which teachers’ best ideas and practices are allowed to flourish without bureaucratic obstacles such as stifling curriculum choices and paperwork which gets in the way of allowing inspiration to flow in the classroom.

At the BTU school, the faculty will be a group of dedicated, experienced teachers who work together to design the curriculum, share their best instructional practices, and will have the freedom to teach in ways that meet every child’s needs.  We believe that unleashing the potential of teachers is the best way to lift every child to new heights of achievement, and break out of the one-size-fits-all ideas that have come to dominate American education thinking recently.

What are the school hours?

The school hours will be 8:30-3:00.

Will there be an afterschool program?

Yes, the Hyde Park YMCA will sponsor an afterschool program on-site running until 6:00. The fee will be on a sliding scale depending upon family income.

What community partners will the BTU School work with?

We recently finalized an agreement to partner with Simmons College as a Professional Development School. We also have confirmed partnerships with a number of organizations, including Sports for Kids, the Hyde Park YMCA, the Museum of Fine Arts, Forest Hills Cemetery, and the Boston Children's Museum. We are engaged in discussions with other local organizations to allow our students to take advantage of the best that Boston has to offer.

Who is eligible to apply?

Any student living in the West Zone, including all of Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, West Roxbury, and parts of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Hyde Park.

What foreign language will be taught?

We originally planned to teach Mandarin to all students. However, after much discussion among the staff and planning group, we recently decided to offer Spanish language instruction. We believe that Spanish instruction will best meet the needs of all students in the school and take advantage of the language ability that many students already have.
